Consumers who took the drug Yaz experienced twice the risk of acquired a blood clot with Yaz as opposed to other birth control medications. There are many life threating side effects associated with Yaz to include heart arrhythmias, electrolyte imbalance, hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, stroke, gallbladder problems, blood clots, embolism and sudden death in some cases.
The Food and Drug Administration stated that the commercials emphasized the drug ability to treat PMS and acne at any level but was only approved to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder and moderate acne. Bayer, the manufacturer of the drug Yaz, overstated the effectiveness to treat both conditions. Commercials that were advertised focused on the positive effects of the contraceptive but used distractions such as music to draw the attention away from the harmful side effects in the commercials. In 2008 the FDA voted to have the block-box warning labeling on Yaz contraceptives. This is the most serious label to warn about dangerous side effects.
The severe reactions associated with the contraceptive are linked to Drospirenone and new synthetic progesterone. Drospirenone can elevate levels of potassium which can cause serious heart conditions and health concerns. Bayer is accused of not doing enough research on potential side effects and not issuing a recall after reports indicated potentially harmful and life threatening side effects.
